  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This Homemade Stuffing Recipe combines toasted bread cubes, sautéed onions, celery, and fresh herbs for the ultimate Thanksgiving side dish. Perfectly buttery, golden on top, and tender inside, this stuffing recipe delivers comforting flavor in every bite. It’s easy to make, versatile, and ideal for holiday dinners or cozy family meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10 cups cubed sourdough or French bread (day-old preferred)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups diced onions
  • 1½ cups chopped celery
  • 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten (optional, for binding)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C). Cut bread into 1-inch cubes and toast for 15–20 minutes until crisp and lightly golden. Let cool.
  2. Sauté Vegetables: Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and celery; cook 8–10 minutes until softened. Stir in sage and thyme.
  3. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine toasted bread cubes with sautéed vegetables. Slowly pour in the broth, tossing gently until evenly moistened. Add eggs if using.
  4. Bake the Stuffing: Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake another 10–15 minutes until golden on top.
  5. Serve and Enjoy: Remove from oven, let rest for 5 minutes, then fluff lightly with a fork. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

Use day-old or toasted bread for the best texture, fresh bread will make the stuffing mushy. For vegetarian stuffing, replace butter with olive oil and use vegetable broth. To prep ahead, assemble the dish a day before and bake fresh before serving.
