Description
This ground beef casserole is a hearty, cheesy one-dish dinner that combines tender penne pasta, seasoned lean ground beef, and rich marinara sauce under a golden cheddar crust, all ready in just 35 minutes. It feeds a crowd effortlessly and is one of the most reliable easy ground beef recipes you will ever make.
Ingredients
- 1 pound uncooked penne
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1/2 medium onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1.5 cups marinara sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1.5 cups shredded cheddar cheese (plus optional extra 0.5 cup stirred in)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400°F and position the rack in the middle. Grease a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray.
- Boil the Penne: Bring a large, salted pot of water to a boil and cook the penne for 10 minutes until slightly underdone.
- Brown the Beef: Add olive oil, ground beef, and onion to a skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté for 10 minutes, breaking up the meat, then stir in minced garlic. Drain excess fat if needed.
- Add the Sauce: Stir in marinara sauce and warm through. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Assemble the Casserole: Drain pasta and pour into the baking dish. Add the beef mixture and toss to combine. For extra cheesiness, stir in an additional half cup of cheddar, then top with an even layer of the remaining cheese.
- Bake and Broil: Bake uncovered for 10 minutes until the cheese is melted. Broil for 2-3 minutes to brown the cheese. Serve immediately.
Notes
Cook the penne slightly underdone so it doesn’t turn mushy in the oven. Drain any excess fat from the beef before adding the marinara to keep the casserole from becoming greasy. For extra depth, stir a half cup of cheese directly into the pasta mixture before adding the top layer. Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
